PrioritiseCVE-2026-47218containerd · runwasirunwasi: Forged Wasmtime precompiled OCI layer bypasses runwasi WASI sandboxrunwasi facilitates running Wasm and WASI workloads managed by containerd. Prior to 0.6.1, containerd-shim-wasmtime-v1 can treat Wasmtime precompiled bytes supplied directly in an OCI image layer as a trusted artifact from the precompile-cache path and deserialize them as native code. An attacker who causes a victim to run a crafted image can bypass WebAssembly validation and execute native code in the shim zygote process, gaining the filesystem, environment, credentials, networking, and Linux syscall access available to the workload container. Downstream shims built with runwasi's containerd-shim-wasm precompile-cache API are also affected if they implement Compiler and trust executable precompiled artifacts from OCI image layers; the 0.6.1 boundary applies specifically to containerd-shim-wasmtime and does not independently certify downstream product releases. The flaw escapes the WASI sandbox to the workload container boundary, but it does not by itself bypass container isolation or provide direct host code execution. This issue is fixed in version 0.6.1.CVSS9.3CriticalEPSS0.39%RoutineCVE-2026-95838containerd +34 morecontainerd: Unpack DoS via repeated opaque whiteoutscontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Prior to 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5, containerd's layer unpack handler repeatedly traverses directories for certain opaque whiteout configurations. A malicious image layer can trigger repeated directory traversals while opaque whiteouts are processed. Pulling or importing the image can consume CPU, delay container startup, and reduce image-pull concurrency for unrelated deployments. This issue is fixed in versions 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5.CVSS4.6MediumEPSS0.22%RoutineCVE-2026-95837containerd +203 morecontainerd CRI plugin: Checkpoint restore bypasses destination security contextcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. From 2.1.0 until 2.2.7 and 2.3.4, containerd's CRI CreateContainer checkpoint restore is vulnerable because CRIU restores process security state from checkpoint data instead of enforcing the destination ContainerConfig. An attacker who can create a container from a crafted checkpoint can supply restored credentials, capabilities, no_new_privs, and seccomp state. The restored process can run as root with full capabilities and no enforced seccomp filters while CRI status reports the requested configuration. Systems that do not use CRI checkpoint restore are not affected. This issue is fixed in versions 2.2.7 and 2.3.4.CVSS7.8HighEPSS0.11%RoutineCVE-2026-107446containerd · overlaybdcontainerd overlaybdcontainerd overlaybd through 1.0.18 has a do_load_index (LSMT index loading) integer overflow (and resultant out-of-bounds heap access) for index_bytes, if an untrusted overlaybd blob from a registry is used in a scenario with multiple overlaybd-backed containers.CVSS6.8MediumEPSS0.41%RoutineCVE-2026-53493containerd +303 moreContainerd has image-pull DoS via crafted OCI index graph amplificationcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Prior to versions 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1, a crafted OCI index graph can force very high CPU/memory usage during PullImage (before container start), causing long ContainerCreating stalls and, at larger sizes, node/runtime instability. Versions 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1 fix the issue.CVSS6.9MediumEPSS0.36%RoutineCVE-2026-53495containerd +303 morecontainerd CRI ExecSync Goroutine Leak Leading to Node-Level Denial of Servicecontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Prior to 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5, containerd on Linux with the CRI plugin enabled can indefinitely block the drainExecSyncIO goroutine in internal/cri/server/container_execsync.go when CRI ExecSync is used by exec probes or lifecycle hooks that launch long-lived background child processes retaining standard input and output pipes. The input and output drain phase has no default timeout and did not stop when the request context was canceled, so repeated ExecSync invocations can accumulate blocked goroutines and host memory. The resulting resource exhaustion can cause the OOM killer to terminate containerd, leaving the container runtime unavailable until restart. Deployments not using containerd's CRI implementation and containers not running on Linux are not affected. This issue is fixed in versions 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5.CVSS6.8MediumEPSS0.16%RoutineCVE-2026-53489containerd +415 morecontainerd: Arbitrary host CRI log file read via symlink following in CRI checkpoint restorecontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Versions prior to 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9 contain a bug where the CRI plugin restores container.log from a checkpoint image without validating a symlinked path. This could result in reading an arbitrary file on the host via kubectl logs. This issue has been fixed in versions 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9.CVSS8.2HighEPSS0.17%RoutineCVE-2026-53492containerd +415 morecontainerd CRI checkpoint restore CDI annotation smugglingcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. In Versions prior to 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9, the CRI implementation improperly trusts Container Device Interface (CDI) annotations found within untrusted checkpoint image metadata during container restoration. When restoring a container from a checkpoint, containerd preserves CDI-related annotations from the checkpoint archive rather than relying solely on the pod's create-time specification. This allows a user with pod creation permissions to bypass standard Kubernetes resource allocation and device plugin enforcement, injecting arbitrary CDI edits (such as device nodes and host mounts) into the restored container. Successful exploitation requires that the node has CDI enabled and contains a matching host CDI specification for the requested device; environments where CDI is disabled or lacking sensitive device specifications are not affected. This issue has been fixed in versions 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9.CVSS9.6CriticalEPSS0.35%RoutineCVE-2026-50195containerd +415 morecontainerd: CRI checkpoint import allows local image tag poisoningcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Versions prior to 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9 contain a vulnerability in the CRI checkpoint import process where it fails to validate the image references specified within a checkpoint image's configuration. An attacker with permissions to create pods can use a crafted checkpoint image to force containerd to pull a malicious image and assign it an arbitrary local tag, thereby poisoning the node's local image cache. Subsequently, if other pods on the same node attempt to use the poisoned tag with an IfNotPresent (or Never) pull policy, they will unknowingly execute the attacker's malicious image instead of the legitimate one. This can lead to a compromise of the affected pods, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary code under the victim pod's identity. This issue has been fixed in versions 2.3.2, 2.2.5 and 2.1.9.CVSS9.9CriticalEPSS0.30%RoutineCVE-2026-47262containerd +370 morecontainerd image-triggered runtime DoS via unbounded group parsingcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Versions prior to 1.7.33, 2.0.10, 2.1.9, 2.2.5 and 2.3.2, contain a vulnerability that allows a maliciously crafted image to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. When creating a container from this image, memory exhaustion occurs, leading to an Out Of Memory (OOM) kill of the containerd process. This renders the container runtime API unavailable and can disrupt clients such as the Docker Engine or Kubernetes control-plane components. This issue has been fixed in versions 1.7.33, 2.0.10, 2.1.9, 2.2.5 and 2.3.2.CVSS5.5MediumEPSS0.27%RoutineCVE-2026-46680containerd +363 morecontainerd user ID handling bypass allows runAsNonRoot evasioncontainerd is an open-source container runtime. In versions prior to 1.7.32, 2.0.9, 2.2.4 and 2.3.1, containers launched with a numeric User directive that cannot be parsed as a 32-bit integer are incorrectly treated as a username, leading to runAsNonRoot evasion. If a crafted image provides an /etc/passwd file mapping this large numeric string to root, the container ultimately runs as root (UID 0). This allows the Kubernetes runAsNonRoot restriction to be bypassed, causing unexpected behavior for environments that require containers to run as a non-root user. This issue has been fixed in versions 1.7.32, 2.0.9, 2.2.4 and 2.3.1.CVSS7.8HighEPSS0.16%PrioritiseCVE-2026-53488containerd +383 morecontainerd CRI plugin: — image-config `LABEL` flows to restart-monitor `binary://` logger: host-root command execution from an image pullcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. In versions prior to 1.7.33, 2.3.2, 2.2.5, 2.1.9, and 2.0.10 the CRI plugin propagates labels from an image config (LABEL instruction in Dockerfile) to a container without validation. This may result in executing an arbitrary command on the host, via a plugin that consumes container labels for some operations. This issue has been fixed in versions 1.7.33, 2.3.2, 2.2.5, 2.1.9, and 2.0.10.CVSS9.4CriticalEPSS0.18%RoutineCVE-2025-64329containerd +362 morecontainerd CRI server: Host memory exhaustion through Attach goroutine leakcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Versions 1.7.28 and below, 2.0.0-beta.0 through 2.0.6, 2.1.0-beta.0 through 2.1.4, and 2.2.0-beta.0 through 2.2.0-rc.1 contain a bug in the CRI Attach implementation where a user can exhaust memory on the host due to goroutine leaks. This issue is fixed in versions 1.7.29, 2.0.7, 2.1.5 and 2.2.0. To workaround this vulnerability, users can set up an admission controller to control accesses to pods/attach resources.CVSS6.9MediumEPSS0.17%RoutineCVE-2024-25621containerd +360 morecontainerd affected by a local privilege escalation via wide permissions on CRI directorycontainerd is an open-source container runtime. Versions 0.1.0 through 1.7.28, 2.0.0-beta.0 through 2.0.6, 2.1.0-beta.0 through 2.1.4 and 2.2.0-beta.0 through 2.2.0-rc.1 have an overly broad default permission vulnerability. Directory paths `/var/lib/containerd`, `/run/containerd/io.containerd.grpc.v1.cri` and `/run/containerd/io.containerd.sandbox.controller.v1.shim` were all created with incorrect permissions. This issue is fixed in versions 1.7.29, 2.0.7, 2.1.5 and 2.2.0. Workarounds include updating system administrator permissions so the host can manually chmod the directories to not have group or world accessible permissions, or to run containerd in rootless mode.CVSS7.8HighEPSS0.17%RoutineCVE-2025-47291containerd +18 morecontainerd CRI plugin: Incorrect cgroup hierarchy assignment for containers running in usernamespaced Kubernetes pods.containerd is an open-source container runtime. A bug was found in the containerd's CRI implementation where containerd, starting in version 2.0.1 and prior to version 2.0.5, doesn't put usernamespaced containers under the Kubernetes' cgroup hierarchy, therefore some Kubernetes limits are not honored. This may cause a denial of service of the Kubernetes node. This bug has been fixed in containerd 2.0.5+ and 2.1.0+. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. As a workaround, disable usernamespaced pods in Kubernetes temporarily.CVSS7.5HighEPSS0.29%RoutineCVE-2025-47290containerd +24 moreContainerd vulnerable to host filesystem access during image unpackcontainerd is a container runtime. A time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) vulnerability was found in containerd v2.1.0. While unpacking an image during an image pull, specially crafted container images could arbitrarily modify the host file system. The only affected version of containerd is 2.1.0. Other versions of containerd are not affected. This bug has been fixed in containerd 2.1.1. Users should update to this version to resolve the issue. As a workaround, ensure that only trusted images are used and that only trusted users have permissions to import images.CVSS7.6HighEPSS0.51%RoutineCVE-2024-40635containerd +285 morecontainerd has an integer overflow in User ID handlingcontainerd is an open-source container runtime. A bug was found in containerd prior to versions 1.6.38, 1.7.27, and 2.0.4 where containers launched with a User set as a `UID:GID` larger than the maximum 32-bit signed integer can cause an overflow condition where the container ultimately runs as root (UID 0). This could cause unexpected behavior for environments that require containers to run as a non-root user. This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.6.38, 1.7.27, and 2.04. As a workaround, ensure that only trusted images are used and that only trusted users have permissions to import images.CVSS7.8HighEPSS0.30%RoutineCVE-2023-25173containerd +8 morecontainerd supplementary groups are not set up properlycontainerd is an open source container runtime. A bug was found in containerd prior to versions 1.6.18 and 1.5.18 where supplementary groups are not set up properly inside a container. If an attacker has direct access to a container and manipulates their supplementary group access, they may be able to use supplementary group access to bypass primary group restrictions in some cases, potentially gaining access to sensitive information or gaining the ability to execute code in that container. Downstream applications that use the containerd client library may be affected as well.
This bug has been fixed in containerd v1.6.18 and v.1.5.18. Users should update to these versions and recreate containers to resolve this issue. Users who rely on a downstream application that uses containerd's client library should check that application for a separate advisory and instructions. As a workaround, ensure that the `"USER $USERNAME"` Dockerfile instruction is not used. Instead, set the container entrypoint to a value similar to `ENTRYPOINT ["su", "-", "user"]` to allow `su` to properly set up supplementary groups.CVSS7.8HighEPSS0.54%RoutineCVE-2023-25153containerd +7 morecontainerd OCI image importer memory exhaustioncontainerd is an open source container runtime. Before versions 1.6.18 and 1.5.18, when importing an OCI image, there was no limit on the number of bytes read for certain files. A maliciously crafted image with a large file where a limit was not applied could cause a denial of service. This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.6.18 and 1.5.18. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. As a workaround, ensure that only trusted images are used and that only trusted users have permissions to import images.CVSS6.2MediumEPSS0.36%RoutineCVE-2022-23471containerd +27 morecontainerd CRI stream server: Host memory exhaustion through terminal resize goroutine leakcontainerd is an open source container runtime. A bug was found in containerd's CRI implementation where a user can exhaust memory on the host. In the CRI stream server, a goroutine is launched to handle terminal resize events if a TTY is requested. If the user's process fails to launch due to, for example, a faulty command, the goroutine will be stuck waiting to send without a receiver, resulting in a memory leak. Kubernetes and crictl can both be configured to use containerd's CRI implementation and the stream server is used for handling container IO. This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.6.12 and 1.5.16. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. Users unable to upgrade should ensure that only trusted images and commands are used and that only trusted users have permissions to execute commands in running containers.CVSS6.5MediumEPSS1.11%
